Dr. Steven Powell is a family medicine physician with over 25 years of clinical experience and a deep commitment to integrated care. Board-certified by both the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Board of Preventive Medicine in addiction medicine, he brings a rare combination of primary care expertise and substance use disorder specialization to CARMAhealth.
Dr. Powell earned his medical degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago and completed his family practice residency at John Peter Smith Hospital through the UT Southwestern Community and Family Medicine program. Before joining CARMAhealth, he served as Associate Medical Director at Barrio Comprehensive Health Center in San Antonio and spent over a decade at Austin Regional Clinic, where he also served on the board of directors.
As Medical Director at CARMAhealth, Dr. Powell is committed to forging a synthesis of primary care and addiction medicine. His patients benefit from a level of integrated, whole-person care that few practices can offer. He is a member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the Texas Academy of Family Physicians.
