Your First Visit, Step by Step

Seeing a psychiatrist for the first time can feel uncertain. Here is exactly what happens at CARMAhealth, from the moment you walk in to the moment you leave with a plan.

Before You Arrive

The Hardest Part Is Already Behind You

If you have scheduled your first appointment, you have already done the hardest part. Reaching out takes courage, and our team is here to make everything after that as straightforward as possible.

Before your visit, you will receive a secure link from Phreesia, our online intake system. You can complete your paperwork from home on your own phone, tablet, or computer. It covers your personal information, insurance details, medical history, and a few screening questionnaires. Finishing it ahead of time means less waiting and more time with your provider.

The National Institute of Mental Health recommends preparing a list of your current medications, your symptoms, and any questions you want to ask. You do not need to have everything figured out. Just bring what you can.

Your Appointment

From the Waiting Room to Your Treatment Plan

1

Check In at the Front Desk

When you arrive, our front desk team will confirm your information and let your provider know you are here. If you completed your Phreesia paperwork ahead of time, check-in takes just a few minutes. The waiting area is quiet and comfortable.

2

Meet Your Provider

Your psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner will come to greet you and walk you to their office. They will introduce themselves, explain how the appointment works, and give you time to settle in before anything clinical begins.

3

Have an Open Conversation

Your provider will ask about your symptoms, when they started, and how they affect your daily life. You will talk about your medical and family history, current medications, and what you hope to get out of treatment. This is a conversation, not a test. There are no wrong answers, and you can share at your own pace.

4

Leave with a Clear Plan

By the end of your visit, your provider will share their clinical findings, discuss potential diagnoses, and work with you on a personalized treatment plan. That plan may include medication, TMS therapy, ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, telehealth follow-ups, or a combination. Follow-up appointments are typically scheduled within two to four weeks.

Common Concerns

It's Normal to Wonder

Will I Be Judged?

No. Your provider hears stories like yours every day. Their job is to listen, understand, and help. Nothing you share will surprise them, and everything stays confidential.

What If I Get Emotional?

That is completely okay. Many patients feel emotional during their first visit, and your provider will not rush you. Take your time.

Can I Bring Someone?

Yes. You are welcome to bring a trusted friend or family member for support. They can sit in during the appointment or wait in the lobby, whatever feels right for you.

What If I Don't Know What to Say?

Your provider will guide the conversation with specific questions. You do not need a script or a perfect description of how you feel. Just be honest, and your provider will do the rest.

Getting Ready

How to Prepare for Your Visit

A little preparation goes a long way. Bring your insurance card and a photo ID. Write down your current medications, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements, with dosages. If you have prior psychiatric or medical records, bring those too. Jot down notes about your symptoms: when they started, and how they affect your work, sleep, and relationships.

You do not need to research your condition ahead of time. Your provider will walk you through everything. But if you want a starting point, the National Alliance on Mental Illness has a helpful checklist for preparing for your first appointment.

Initial evaluations at CARMAhealth last 60 to 90 minutes. Follow-ups are shorter, typically 15 to 30 minutes. Our offices are open Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with in-person appointments in Central Austin, Dripping Springs, and Coral Springs, FL. Telehealth visits are available across Texas, Florida, and Virginia.

That is completely normal. Many of our patients are seeing a psychiatrist for the first time. Your provider will explain everything as you go and answer any questions. There is no expectation that you know psychiatric terminology or have a self-diagnosis. Read our Psychiatrist vs. Therapist guide if you are unsure whether a psychiatrist is the right fit.

Your provider will schedule a follow-up appointment, typically within two to four weeks. If medication was prescribed, the follow-up focuses on how you are responding, any side effects, and dosage adjustments. Your treatment plan evolves with you.
